The NYC Street Design Manual
3rd Edition
Process sketches for visualizing mode-sharing and mobility priorities.
As a 2019-2020 NYC Urban Fellow at the former Urban Design + Art + Wayfinding (UDAW) division of NYC DOT, I was a contributing staff writer/designer for the Third Edition of the NYC Street Design Manual. This work included coordination, consolidation and copy-editing of the written manuscript and production of the book in Adobe InDesign. I integrated over 500 content revisions from over 10 agencies and dozens of designers and authored new written and visual material.
The NYC Street Design Manual is New York City’s blueprint for street design, collecting standards, guidelines and policies for building resilient, inclusive and healthy public space. It is a product of diverse subject matter expertise and experience in shaping over 6,000 miles of streets — those arteries that sustain the City.
Published first in 2009 by the NYC Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) with contributions from designers, policymakers and practitioners across government and industry, the Third Edition presents new and proven-effective strategies for enhancing safety, accessibility and quality, from protected bike lanes to green infrastructure; from historical preservation to materials reuse.
